The Ghost of the Gadfly

In  1897, Ethel Lilian Voynich, published a book, “The Gadfly”, based upon a young man's tragic experience with his lifelong faith. After being betrayed by leaders that he trusted, he made a common mistake. To him, all that had to do with faith was personified in Catholicism. There was no experience with God beyond. By abandoning Catholicism he abandoned any and all faith in God and became an atheist.

In the fictitious book, the young man, Arthur Burton, returned some 13 years later as “The Gadfly”, to somehow right what was turned wrong in his early life as a revolutionary.

With all due respects to the author and the plot, I would have hoped for a different ending, one where he would have found faith beyond Catholicism.

If you are disillusioned with Catholicism or your view of Christianity in general, it might be a blessing in disguise. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Proverbs 25:2  It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

Don't stop searching. Don't put your hope in man, put your hope in Jesus.
