"The Strait and the Wide Gate"

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The story of the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the European discovery of the two American continents is certainly one of the greatest events in human history. Yet the discovery was not even his goal which was to prove that, the earth being round, it was possible to sail to the east by traveling west. It took another 28 years, in 1520, for Ferdinand Magellan, through trial and error,  to carefully navigate his way through the islands of the tip of South America and find a narrow passageway that led to another ocean - a ‘peaceful’ sea, compared to the turbulent Atlantic. Being the first European to lay eyes on that peaceful ocean, he named it the ‘Pacific’. And today, the narrow passageway that he found is named after him, called  the ‘Strait of Magellan”.

With over 1.3 BILLION people on the face of the earth who call themselves Catholic, and with their sheer size and wealth, it would seem to lend credibility to the idea that the Vatican is God’s representation of Christ upon this earth, But the ‘strait’, or narrow gate that Jesus spoke of leaves no doubt that in validating Christianity, size and numbers do not matter. In fact, it could be an obvious indication of what the ‘strait’ and the ‘wide’ gates are.

.

Another ‘sacred cow’ is that only those with academic ‘letters’ are qualified to speak for Christ, when a simple study of scripture shows the exact opposite. The apostles were perceived by the religious rulers of that day to be ‘unlearned and
Ignorant men (Acts 4:13), and Paul made it clear in much of his writing that God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise:

1 Corinthians 1:26-29
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

From the perspective of scripture, this vital truth is perfectly clear: what we need to know for salvation is clear and simply laid out so that the common man can easily understand it.

.

It is indeed incumbent upon all of us to judge who is qualified to speak in behalf of the greatest, most important subject you can ever study, that which involves your eternal destiny. Most would assume that the one with the higher degrees have the greater qualifications in these matters - yes, ‘academia’ indeed sets the bar for most people, even though that bar, through scripture and common sense can be quickly disqualified. After all - it was not the learned scholars who understood Jesus - it was those who were not knowledgeable according to worldly standards:

.

The elite of the world might think that academic accomplishment is the key to spiritual understanding but really - would God have been just to give spiritual insight to the wealthy and worldly wise? Instead, he turned that notion on its head:

Matthew 11:25
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

.

So we see that really, the titles after a person’s name does not make anyone any more qualified - we all have a level playing field here.

.

There is good news in scripture about knowing who to trust - albeit the good news comes in the form of a warning! Jesus said in Matthew 7:

.

“15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Wow - isn’t that wonderful! Jesus let us know they we need not walk in deception being led astray by wolves sheep’s clothing, in other words, false teachers.

.

Paul the Apostle also gave us the same warning that Satan himself can transform himself into an angel of light:

.

2 Corinthians 11:
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Colossians 2:8-10
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
.
And in rejecting these new concepts that had their roots in paganism, these ‘true believers’ became the minority: overshadowed by the ‘wider’, ‘broader’ way, and remained in the shadows, the catacombs, exemplifying the simple teaching of Jesus and the apostles, as the masses that embraced these new philosophical ideas became additionally entrapped by the political enticements in the 4th century. The work of the church is not to meddle in world politics - which Catholicism has done since the time they sold out to Constantine:

"When the kindness of Constantine gave Holy Church endowments
In lands and leases, lordships and servants,
The Romans heard a angel cry on high above them,
“This day dos Ecclesiae has drunk venom
And all who have Peter’s power are poisoned forever.”
- William Langland, 'Piers Plowman’ - 14th century.

.

From there, the ‘The Wide Gate’ became the antithesis of Apostolic teaching, adopting pagan customs and fables to appeal to the masses, in absurd clergy dress, pageantry and rituals, the need for a ‘sacrifice’ (even though  Jesus became the sacrifice once and for all, Hebrews 3-10 chapters), totally foreign to the teaching of the lowly Nazarene and his rough hewn apostles, and also the learned Apostle Paul who was clear that one need not be a ‘person of letters’ to understand the simplicity of the things of God.

In addition to this militant - worldly marriage to mammon is the audacious dogma that (falsely) entitled them to proprietary ownership, or a monopoly of God’s power and authority.

.

This ‘monopoly’ is reinforced by the fallacy that ‘priests’ possess some magical power to transform a wafer into flesh and blood, forgive sin, and perform other functions that mere individuals cannot do when the Bible teaches there is NO priesthood outside of the believer, and we all have the power and privilege of going directly to the high priest, which is Jesus Christ himself!

.

The Apostles themselves had the grand delusion that they were the only ones that had any authority from God, but were in fact rebuked by Jesus for their presumption:

.

Mark 9:38-40
38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

Besides the absence of the teaching in the Bible of some magical priestly power passed  down though a succession ‘golden chain’ that reaches back to Jesus, here’s some facts that clearly shows the absurdity. Here’s the story of “Scipione Rebiba”.

(From Wikipedia:)
“Scipione Rebiba (3 February 1504 – 23 July 1577) was an Italian cardinal of Roman Catholicism.

“He is of particular significance since more than 95% of all living Catholic bishops trace their episcopal lineage back to him. Today, more than 95% of the New World's and more than 5,200 Catholic bishops alive today, including Pope Francis, trace their episcopal lineage back to Rebiba. However, no one is sure who consecrated him because no supporting documentation has been found.

.

“In 1551, with the full support of the head of the Inquisition in Rome, Rebiba introduced the Roman Inquisition into Naples and was granted the office of Commissary of the Roman Inquisition.

.

“Cardinal Scipione Rebiba died in Rome on 23 July 1577, and was interred in the Church of S. Silvestro on the Quirinal. His memorial monument lauds him as HAERETICAE PRAVITATIS INQUISITORI SUMMO FIDEI ORTHODOXAE ACERRIMO PROPUGNATORI ('Inquisitor into heretical depravity, a most fierce fighter for the orthodox faith').

The wrap up is this: since the church was birthed into this world on the day of Pentecost, recorded in the 2nd Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, there has always been a mystical body of believers that  transcends man made  institutions and organizations that has exemplified the teaching of Jesus and his apostles. In fact, Jesus did give the keys to the kingdom of God to the Apostle Peter, but also in fact, Peter used those keys of authority when the men who heard that first message preached on that first day were ‘pricked in their hearts:

.

Acts 2:37-39
37 Now when they heard this {Peter’s preaching}, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

.

And the most important question ever asked, is answered with the most important answer ever  given:

.

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Thus unlocking the door of salvation for the very first time - declaring the gospel - the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus, the very image that cast the shadow of ‘good things to come’ centuries earlier in the Tabernacle and the Temple worship of the altar (the place of death), the laver (the place of washing) and the Holiest of Holies - when God accepted the sacrifice!

.
And for time immortal is the real apostolic succession - the HOLY GHOST, Christ in you the hope of glory!

.

Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call!
